WSA 2000 BOYS COMPLETE GREAT FIRST SEASON!

GCSA "A" League Runners-Up

The WSA 2000 Boys coached by Tom Apitz and Pele Portillo completed an excellent 2010 Fall campaign in the team’s first year of competitive soccer. The squad completed the "A" League schedule, the top league in Tulsa (because of the absence of the Premiere League in first season of u11’s) on 5 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss.  That one loss was conceded to the league champions, OK Texans, who finished in front of WSA for the championship.

WSA 00 boys amassed 27 goals for and 11 against in their inaugural campaign behind a talented attack and an improving defense. The team scored 4 or more goals in seven of their ten games on the season (including tournament play).

Coach Apitz points to an apparent low moment of the season as the "key".  After giving away 3 goals in 4 minutes to OK Texans the team’s response was a pivotal moment.  "We were down and out, the team morale was obsolete," reported Apitz.  The halftime speech delivered by Coach Portillo and Apitz encouraged the players to persevere.  "We shut the Texans down in the 2nd half.  We lost the game 4-2, but it was the perseverance when being down that built the character of the team for the remainder of the season and hopefully seasons to come."

Coach Apitz refers to the "future" with the 2000 boys often.  Such a young team with a lot of promise and certainly ambitions.  The coaches recognize a lot of talent, but they also know the future of the players is paramount and that talent alone will not suffice.  The team also advanced to the semifinals of the only tournament they attended this year at the Midwest Labor Day Invitational.

The squad will now prepare for competition in the Oklahoma Premiere League, entering that league arena at the youngest age possible and making history as WSA’s first u11 representative in the OPL.

The coaching staff recognizes the importance of the support network provided by the families on the team as the cornerstone of the team’s success and foundation.  "Committed parents, players and coaches are the key to success.  To be successful in this game, it has to be more than a game and it is that for the player and parents of the WSA 2000 boys."

Congratulations and well done WSA 2000 Boys on a great first season!
