OLYMPIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM HAS WSA FLAVOR
Mcginis Gets Game Tying Goal Against Carolina

New Orleans -- Hana Mcginis tallied the game tying goal for Oklahoma's 93 girls on Saturday (1/17/09) against North Caroline at Olympic Development Program Regional Tournament action. Mcginis, who regularly scores goals for WSA 94 is in her second stint with the State team, and has overcome injury and a bit of adversity to get "back in the saddle". Her coach Josh McElroy reports that she just began regaining form toward the tail end of the Fall season. While Oklahoma fell short in the tournament's other two games, it did have a "WSA flavor" to it as Bonnie Duffield, WSA 93, also saw action for Oklahoma at the Regional event. Courtney Fielden, also from WSA 93, was an alternate for the event.

There was no news yet from the 92 boys team, but Johnny Chavez and Sammie Doenig, of WSA 92, both saw action for Oklahoma's 92 boys at the Regional Tournament.

While we have an incomplete list at the moment several other WSA'ers have been called to the "State ODP Team" this offseason including, Katie Edwards, WSA 95, Ricky Jones (alternate) WSA 94, Brent Bradford (alternate) WSA 94, Erica Gibbs, WSA 97, and Mariah Nicolet, WSA 98. We will update a more complete list of State ODP team members later this month. Congratulations to all players and good luck in representing the great state of Oklahoma!

98 BOYS MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Community Action Program -- CAP's In Action!

On Saturday, November 22, the WSA ’98 Boys soccer team, along with parents and siblings, helped the Eastern Oklahoma Community Food Bank to feed hungry children in Tulsa County by participating in their Food 4 Kids Backpack Program.

This program provides a weekly backpack of shelf-stable, nutritious food to children identified by their school as being at risk of hunger over the weekend, when free or reduced-cost school breakfasts and lunches are not available.

The Food Bank did not expect the team to complete the packing of more than 500 backpacks. But with the team effort put forth, more than 600 backpacks were completed in half the amount of time they thought it would take the team to complete 500. We believe they could have completed over a thousand backpacks had stock been available.

Childhood hunger is not just a moral issue but also a social one. A child who is ill-equipped to learn because of hunger and poverty is more likely to face a variety of challenges as an adult. As such, the existence of childhood hunger threatens to impact our future prosperity. By volunteering for such a worthy cause, the WSA 98 Boys played an essential role in helping ensure a better future for all Oklahomans.

The West Side Alliance S.C. includes as a component of it's "player development program" the CAP's program, or Community Action Program. The past few years WSA has partnered with Eugene Field Elementary School and American Cancer Society clubwide, while each team is charged with performing one "community outreach initiative" during the season.

To learn more about the Community Action Program you can visit the CAP section on the WSA website.

Thanks 98 boys for your example of servitude and generosity! And thanks team parents and manager Mrs Mitchell for organizing and leading the event!
